CBSE class 9 English Three Men in a Boat – Summary of the Novel

Three Hypochondriacs—Talk only of Diseases

There were four of them—three men and a dog. Three longtime friends, George Wingrave (George), Carl Hentschel (Harris) and the narrator, Jerome K. Jerome, were sitting in a room, smoking and talking about how physically bad they were from a medical point of view. The narrator Jerome suffered from every disease except the housemaid’s knee. He was an interesting case from medical point of view-‘a hospital’ in himself. Harris complained of extraordinary fits of giddiness. George also fancied that he was ill. All the three came to the unanimous decision that overwork had produced a general depression throughout their physical and mental systems. All of them needed ‘rest and a complete change’. They wanted to go to new places far from the maddening crowd-out of the reach of the noisy world. George suggested; “Let’s go up the river”. They could enjoy fresh air, exercise and peace. The change of scene would occupy their minds and the hard work would give them a good appetite and sleep. The suggestion was approved by all except Montmorency, the dog.

Discuss Plans

They pulled out the maps, and discussed plans. They decided to start on the following Saturday from Kingston. Camping out in rainy weather was not pleasant. So, it was decided and compromised that they would camp out and sleep out on clear and fine nights. During rainy nights, they would stay in hotels, inns or pubs. Even the dog welcomed that compromise. They made a list of things to be carried with them. The river Thames would not allow the navigation of a boat sufficiently large and heavily loaded. George gave a practical suggestion that they could carry with them only the things that were most necessary and they couldn’t do without. A heavily loaded boat could be cumbersome and even dangerous to manage. Then they discussed the food question. All the three agreed that they would not use an oil stove for cooking. Once they had taken up an oil stove and kept it in the nose of the boat. It oozed up and saturated the scenery and spoiled the atmosphere and their moods. They confined themselves to methylated spirit. For breakfast and lunch George suggested eggs and bacon as they were easy to cook. Cold meat, tea, bread and butter, and jam could be taken. But they avoided cheese. Cheese like oil, has too much odour. They took up the whisky and didn’t take beer or- wine. They make people sleepy and heavy. They didn’t believe in the “weather forecast” swindle. The weather was a thing which was beyond their control. The newspaper forecast was generally misleading. It forecasts precisely the opposite of what is going to happen today. They drove off in great style and arrived at Waterloo. Nobody at Waterloo did ever know anything about the train. Jerome and Harris were unable to find the correct train at Waterloo station. So they had to bribe half a crown to a train driver to take his train to Kingston. So Jerome and Harris made their journey to Kingston by train. At Kingston they collected their hired boat and started their journey. Later they met George up-river at Weybridge. The remainder of the story relates their river journey and the incidents that occur.

Kingston and Hampton Court on Thames

It was a glorious late spring morning. The grey old palace of Tudors at Kingston made a sunny and bright picture. The river front looked picturesque. Saxon kings were crowned at Kingston. Great Caesar crossed the river there. The Roman army camped upon its sloping uplands. The old red-bricks buildings and oak staircases spoke very plainly of days when Kingston was a royal borough. They ran the boat on past Hampton Court. It looked so peaceful, quiet and a ‘dear old place’ to ramble round in the early morning. Hampton Court Maze was one of the largest in Europe. Harris led a group of twenty people but was lost in the maze. Whatever way they turned, they always found themselves in the middle. They could come out of the maze till one of the old keepers came back and helped them to be out. They passed through Mousley Lock (dam). They saw people in bright blazers, gay caps, silken rugs, cloaks, hats and ribbons. All the inhabitants of Hampton and Mousley come and wander round the Lock (dam) in boating costumes with their dogs. Seeing them flirting and joking, watching the boats and beautiful ladies in pretty coloured dresses, is ‘one of the gayest sights near the old London town’. It was a lovely landscape. It was idyllic and poetical. Harris was particularly interested in tombs, graves and epitaphs. The thought of not seeing Mrs. Thomas’s grave made him crazy.

Thames पर Kingston air Hampton Court

Harris Sings A Comic Song

They stopped under the hills by Kempton Park and lunched. Harris sang a comic song at a party and mixed up and messed up things. He never realized “what an ass” he was making of himself. Then they passed Oatlands Park on the right bank of Thames. Henry VIII had once lived in it. The late Duchess of York, who lived at Oatlands, was very fond of dogs. She had a special graveyard made for her fifty dogs. Hilliford and Shepperton were both pretty little spots touching the river but there was nothing remarkable about them. Jerome, Harris and George originally wanted to go on to Magna Charta Island. But they decided to have their supper first and go to bed. They fastened the boat to the spreading roots of a great elm-tree. After having a good supper, they felt satisfied with themselves and the world. Even the dog, Montmorency gave the first sign of contentment and spread his legs out.

Harris ‘

Chilly Cold

The morning looked damp and chilly. George and Harris retired into the boat. It was bitterly cold and the wind cut like a knife. Even Jerome dropped the idea of having a bath. But as he turned, the branch on which he was standing gave way. He and the towel went in together with a heavy splash. He was out mid-stream with a gallon of Thames water inside him.

Magna Charta Island

They went over to Magna Charta Island. They had a look at the stone which stood in the cottage there. The great Charter was said to have been signed on it. Then they saw the ruins of an old priory where Henry VIII is said to have waited for and met Anny Boleyn. They found Marlow one of the pleasantest river centres. It was a bustling and lively little town. It was while floating in his boat that the great romantic poet Shelley, who was then living at Marlow, wrote, his famous poem ‘The Revolt of Islam The ‘only subject’ on which the dog, Montmorency and the narrator had serious differences of opinion was related to cats. Jerome liked cats while Montmorency didn’t. They all agreed that as a change from towing, Harris would steer the boat and George and Jerome would scull or row with oars. The narrator (Jerome) always felt that he was doing more work than he should do. But he always took a great pride in his work. He always believed that works kept him in a better state of preservation.

Magna Charta

Reading, Streatley and Goring

They came in sight of Reading about eleven. They found the river ‘dirty and dismal’ there. Parliament was rushed off to Reading during a plague at West Minster in 1625. The ancient town of Streatley was like other riverside towns and villages. They stayed for two days at Streatley and got their clothes washed. But the dirt contained in the river worked into their clothes. The washerwoman charged just three times the usual price to wash them.
The area adjoining Streatley and Goring is a great fishing centre. The river had plenty of pike, roach, dace, gudgeon and eels. One could sit and fish for them all day. They left Streatley next morning and pulled up to Cullham. They slept under the canvas, in the backwater there. They passed through Iffley Lock at about half -past twelve. There they cleaned up the boat. Between Iffley and Oxford is the most difficult part of the river. First, the current drove them on to the right bank, and then on to the left, then into the middle. During this period a good deal of bad language was used by them. Everybody always turned exceptionally irritable on the river. The air of the river had generally a demoralising effect even on the boatmen. They used language, which, no doubt, they regretted in their calmer moments.

Reading, Streatley और Goring

Homeward Journey

They spent two very pleasant days at Oxford. Montmorency thought he had got to heaven. He found plenty of dogs in Oxford. The dog had eleven fights on the first and fourteen on the second day. The weather changed on the third day. They started from Oxford upon their homeward journey in the midst of a steady drizzle. Sunlight is the lifeblood of Nature and so is of the river. The river – with the sunlight flashing from its dancing wavelets is a golden fairy stream. And the same river on a chill and dull day is like a spirit-haunted mass of water. The rain continued to pour down the second day too. They sat wrapped up in their overcoats under the canvas. George observed that if they continued further they would contract their certain deaths. They could catch a train from Pangbourne and could reach the town in comfortable time for dinner. Nobody spoke and they looked at one another. They looked up and down the river but there was not a soul in sight. Twenty minutes later all the three followed by the dog were seen creeping stealthily towards the railway station. For the last ten days and more, they had been living on cold meat, coke, bread and jam. The sight of clean napkins and long loaves and the smell of French sauces whetted their appetite. Reaching his hand out for his glass of Burgundy, Harris remarked: “Well, we have had a pleasant trip and my hearty thanks for it to old Father Thames.” The dog gave a short bark to show his agreement.
