क्या आप कल्पना कर सकते हैं कि धरती से दस हजार फुट ऊँचाई से देखने पर आपका शहर कैसा प्रतीत होगा? पूर्णतः और नियोजित अनुपात में, एक भूगोलीय संरचना की तरह प्रतीत होगा। यह आपको उससे अत्यधिक भिन्न दिखाई देगा, जैसा वह वास्तविक रूप में होता है जबकि आप घनी आबादी में घिरे हों। यह एक कवि द्वारा एक शहर के ऐसे ही दृश्य का वर्णन है और वह कुछ ऐसे प्रश्नों का वर्णन करता है जो उसके दिमाग में आते हैं।

जब जेट विमान आसमान में उड़ा शहर की मीलों की दूरी को 6 इंच की पतली परतों में देखकर यह साफ हो गया कि क्यों यह शहर वर्तमान रूप में विकसित हो गया था। भूमि का अव्यवस्थित, अनियोजित तथा बिना शैली का दृश्य दिखाई दिया जब जेट विमान ने आसमान में उड़ान भरी थी।

जब जेट विमान दस हजार फुट की ऊँचाई पर पहुँचा, तब साफ हो गया कि क्यों देशों में शहर वहीं विकसित हुए जहाँ नदियाँ बहती थीं। और क्यों घाटियों में घनी आवादी वसी। भूगोल का वह तर्क-कि जमीन और जल ने मनुष्य को आकर्षित किया था-यह तब स्पष्ट हो गया जब जेट विमान दस हजार फुट की ऊँचाई पर पहुंचा। जब जेट विमान 6 मील ऊपर उठा तब यह स्पष्ट था कि पृथ्वी गोल थी और उस पर भूमि की अपेक्षा समुद्र अधिक था।

परंतु यह समझ पाना मुश्किल था कि धरती पर मानव ने एक दूसरे से नफरत करने के लिए शहरों के आर-पार दीवारें खड़ी कर देने के लिए और मारने-मरने के कारणों को किस प्रकार खोजा। उस ऊँचाई से इसका कारण स्पष्ट नहीं था।
