The Bear Story Exercises Question and Answer 

Answer the following questions.

Question 1.
Where did the lady find the bear cub ? How did she bring it up ?
Answer:
The lady found the bear cub in the forest. At that time it was half-dead of hunger. It was so small and helpless when the lady found it. The lady brought it up on the bottle milk with the help of her old cook.

Question 2.
The bear grew up but “he was a most amiable bear”. Give three examples to prove this.
Answer:
The bear was quite amiable animal. He did not harm anybody, man or beast. He would look amicably at the cattle grazing in the field. He also enjoyed being put in the stable. The children liked him very much and even rode on his back.

Question 3.
What did the bear eat? There were two things he was not allowed to do. What were they?
Answer:
The bear would eat and enjoy bread, porridge, potatoes, cabbages and turnips. He had never tasted meat. He was not allowed to get on the tree for apples. He was also not allowed to break the beehives.

Question 4.
When was the bear tied up with a chain ? Why?
Answer:
Bear was tied up with the chain at night. On Sundays also he was chained when his mistress went to spend the afternoon with her married sister. He sister lived in a solitary house or the other side of the mountain-lake. It was not supposed to be good for him to wander about in the forest with all its temptations. It was not thought to be safe to take him to the forest.

Question 5.
What happened one Sunday when the lady was going to her sister’s house ? What did the lady do? What was the bear’s reaction ?
Answer:
As usual, one Sunday the lady was going to her sister’s house. Suddenly she heard the cracking of a tree-branch. When she looked back, she was horrified to see a bear coming at full speed. The lady got very angry. She told the bear in severest voice to go back. She even hit him on the nose with her parasol. The bear opened its mouth several times to say something. Then the bear reluctantly went back while looking at the lady till he lost sight of her.

Question 6.
Why was the bear looking sorry for himselt in the evening? Why did the cook got angry with her mistress ?
Answer:
The bear was regretful and die appointed because he was all alone for the whole day without his mistress. Moreover, the lady was very angry because she felt that bear had disobeyed her by following her. The cook got angry with the mistress because he was well-behaved throughout the day. He had been sitting calmly “as meek as an angel.” The bear had been looking all the day towards the gate waiting for his mistress to come back.

Answer:
From the times immemorial the people have been keeping pets. They keep pets for the sake of their love and affection. Most of the people keep dogs and cats as pets. Some people keep pets to remove their loneliness. Besides dogs and cats, many people also keep strange creatures likes snakes as pet. Some people also keep bear, monkeys, cubs, and birds as pets.

Question 2.
The second bear did not attack the lady because he was afraid of her. Do you agree?
Answer.
I don’t think the second bear was afraid of the lady. In fact she was under the false impression that the bear following her was her own pet bear. That is why she shouted at Em and even beaten him with her parasol. I think her confidence and authoritative attitude stunned and surprised the other bear. I think probably that was one of the reasons why the bear did not attack her. Most people are afraid of the bears. They don’t behave with them as the lady did.

The Bear Story Introduction

The lady in an old manor-house had a pet bear. It was a very friendly bear, who loved vegetables, apples and honey. He roamed freely during the day. But he was chained at night. The lady visited her sister every Sunday. She would chain the bear the whole afternoon. One Sunday, while walking through the dense forest, she found him following her. She scolded him and the bear went back. Later on she came to know that it was not her pet bear.

  • जागीरदार के घर में उस औरत ने भालू पाला हुआ था।
  • वह एक बेहद मित्रवत् भालू था जिसे सब्जियों, सेब और शहद से प्यार था।
  • वह दिन में घूमता था पर रात को जंजीर से बाँध कर रखा जाता था।

किसी जमाने में एक औरत थी जो जागीरदार के पुराने घर में एक बड़े जंगल की सीमा पर रहती थी। इस औरत के पास एक पालतू भालू था जो उसका बहुत प्रिय (स्नेहशील) था। यह (भालू) भूख से अधमरा जंगल में मिला था और इतना छोटा और असहाय था कि उसे पालने के लिए उस औरत और बूढ़े रसोइये द्वारा बोतल द्वारा दूध पिलाना पड़ता था। ‘

यह कई वर्ष पहले की बात थी और अब वह एक बड़ा भालू हो गया था, इतना बड़ा और शक्तिशाली कि वह एक गाय को मार सकता था और चाहने पर उसे दोनों पजों में दबा कर ले जा सकता था। पर वह ऐसा करना नहीं चाहता था, वह एक बहुत ही मित्रवत् भालू था जो कभी भी किसी मानव या जानवर को नुकसान पहुँचाने का स्वप्न में भी नहीं सोच सकता था।

वह अपनी माँद के बाहर बैठकर अपनी छोटी, सुबोध आँखों से पास खेत में चरती भेड़-बकरियों को देखता रहता। तीन खुरदरे पहाड़ी टटू उसे अच्छी तरह जानते थे और जब वह घुड़साल में मालकिन के साथ पैरों को घसीटता चला जाता तो वे बुरा नहीं मानते थे। बच्चे उसकी पीठ पर सवारी किया करते थे और एक बार से अधिक उन्हें (बच्चों को) उसके दो पंजों के बीच जकड़े हुए सोते हुए पाया गया था।

तीन कुत्ते उसके साथ खेलना पसंद करते थे, उसके कान खींचते थे और अपनी पूँछ को जमीन पर पटकते थे और उसे हर तरीके से छेड़ते थे, पर उसने कभी भी बिल्कुल बुरा नहीं माना। उसने कभी भी मांस का स्वाद न चखा था, जो खाना कुत्ते खाते थे वही खाना वह भी खाता था और अधिकतर एक ही प्लेट में-डबलरोटी, दलिया, आलू, बंदगोभी, शलगम खाता था। उसकी भूख बहुत अच्छी थी पर उसका दोस्त रसोइया ध्यान रखता था कि उसे पूरा खाने को मिले।

भालू शाकाहारी होते हैं अगर उन्हें मौका मिले, फलों को वे सर्वाधिक पसंद करते हैं। वह शरद ऋतु में चाहत भरी आँखों से पके हुए सेबों के बगीचे को देखता रहता और अपने युवावस्था के दिनों में कई बार स्वयं को पेड़ पर चढ़ने की लालसा से नहीं रोक पाता था और कुछ सेब खाकर अपना दिल बहलाता। भालू अपने हावभाव से देखने में बहुत कमज़ोर और सुस्त लगते हैं पर जब वह सेब के पेड़ के पास आता है तो वह उस खेल में किसी भी स्कूल के लड़के को हरा सकता है।

अब उसने सीख लिया था कि यह कानून के विरुद्ध था, पर वह उस सेब के लिए अपनी छोटी आँखें पूरी खुली रखता था जो धरती पर गिरते थे। मधुमक्खी के छत्ते से भी उसे कई मुश्किलें आई थीं; उसको एक बार इसके लिए सजा दी गई और नाक से बहते खून के साथ उसे दो-तीन दिन चेन से बाँधकर रखा गया और फिर उसने कभी ऐसा नहीं किया। वरना उसे सिर्फ रात को बाँध कर रखा जाता था और यह ठीक भी था, क्योंकि भालू भी कुत्ते की तरह नाराज हो जाता है, अगर उसे जंजीर से बाँधकर रखा जाए।

  • महिला हर रविवार अपनी बहन के घर जाती और पूरी अपराह्न भालू को जंजीर से बँधा छोड़ जाती।
  • एक रविवार को घने जंगल से गुजरते हुए उसने उसे (भालू) अपना पीछा करते हुए पाया।
  • वह कहना न मानने पर भालू से इतनी नाराज हुई कि उसके नाक पर छाते से मारा। भालू वास्तव में मित्रवत् था।

प्रत्येक रविवार को उसे जंजीर से बाँधकर उसकी मालकिन अपराह्न को अपनी शादीशुदा बहन से मिलने जाती थी जो पहाड़ी-झील के दूसरी तरफ अकेले घर में रहती थी, जो घने जंगल में से एक घंटे का पैदल रास्ता था। यह उसके (भालू के) लिए अच्छा नहीं था कि वह इन सब आकर्षणों के साथ जंगल में भटकता, सुरक्षा की दृष्टि से यह बेहतर था।

वह एक बुरा नाविक भी था और एक बार तेज हवा के झोंके से इतना डर गया था कि उसने नाव को उलट दिया और उसे और उसकी मालकिन को किनारे तक तैर कर आना पड़ा। अब वह जानता था कि जब मालकिन उसे रविवार को जंजीर से बाँधकर, प्यार से उसके सिर पर हाथ फेर कर, इस बात का वायदा करके कि यदि उसकी अनुपस्थिति में अच्छा व्यवहार करेगा तो उसे सेब मिलेगा, तो इसका क्या अर्थ है। उसे खेद होता पर फिर भी वह एक अच्छे कुत्ते की तरह आत्मसमर्पण कर देता जब उसकी मालकिन कहती कि वह उसके साथ घूमने नहीं जा सकता।

एक रविवार को जब महिला हमेशा की तरह उसे जंजीर से बाँधकर कर जंगल के बीच पहुंची तो अचानक उसको लगा कि उसे अपने पीछे पेड़ की टहनी के टूटने की आवाज आई। उसने पीछे मुड़कर देखा तो भालू को बहुत तेज गति से अपनी ओर आते देख कर डर गई। देखने में लगता है कि भालू बहुत धीरे-धीरे चलता है पर घसीटकर चलते हुए भी दुलकी लगाते हुए घोड़े से तेज चलता है।

हाँफते हुए और सूंघते हुए एक कुत्ते की तरह वह अपनी सामान्य जगह उसकी एड़ियों पर आ गया। महिला को बहुत गुस्सा आया, उसे खाने के लिए देर हो रही थी, उसे वापस घर ले जाने का समय न था, वह उसे अपने साथ ले जाना न चाहती थी, और इसके अलावा यह उसकी शरारत थी कि उसने उसका कहना नहीं माना था। उसने उसे कठोरतम आवाज में कहा कि वह वापस जाए, उसे छाते से मारने के लिए धमकाते हुए।

वह कुछ पल रुका और उसकी (महिला) की ओर धूर्त आँखों से देखने लगा, पर वह वापस नहीं जाना चाहता था और सूंघता रहा। जब महिला ने देखा कि उसने अपना नया पट्टा खो दिया तो वह और अधिक नाराज हुई और उसने अपने छाते को उसके नाक पर इतनी जोर से मारा कि उसके (छाते के) दो टुकड़े हो गए।

. वह दुबारा रुका, अपना सिर हिलाया और कई बार मुँह खोला जैसा कि वह कुछ कहना चाह रहा हो। तब वह मुड़ा और जिस रास्ते से वह आया था उसी से वापस घसीटते हुए जा रहा था, रास्ते में रुकते हुए, पीछे मुड़ते हुए महिला को देखते हुए जब तक वह दृष्टि से ओझल न हो गई।

जब शाम को महिला वापस आई, भालू बहुत दुःखी मन से अपनी सामान्य जगह मांद के बाहर बैठा था। महिला अभी भी नाराज थी और उसे कठोरता से डाँटने लगी और कहा कि उसे वह दो दिन तक जंजीर में बाँध कर रखेगी। बूढ़ा रसोइया जो भालू . को अपने बेटे की तरह प्यार करता था, वह रसोई से गुस्से से आया।

“आप उसे किसलिए डाँट रही हैं,” रसोइए ने कहा, “वह तो पूरा दिन सोने की तरह अच्छा रहा, उसे आशीर्वाद दीजिए! वह यहाँ कब से अपने पंजों पर एक देवता की तरह शांत बैठा है, पूरा समय दरवाजे की ओर आपके वापस आने के इंतजार में बैठा है।”
